I’m grateful to all the supporters of this stack. I’m heading out to Beijing tomorrow. I will not be writing about China per se (at least not right away) because I have an essay that has been percolating about 1970s bullying and how thankful I am that we didn’t report each other to the authorities when we encountered what today would be considered mild to mildly serious bullying.

In any case, if you want to test the limits of Anglo American secularism, just open a conversation at a dinner table with the gambit, “I’m not a grateful person, but thank you for…” and see how that one goes over the friends and family.
