History is written by the American culture industry: the swords and sandals genre married Biblical epic with Charlton Heston’s abs in my favorite Easter movie, Ben Hur.

But American liberalism keeps winning and so new figures must be called forth to affirm American pluralism. See the recent kerfuffle about Cleopatra. Violet eyed Elizabeth Taylor had already played her as Hollywood diva with a bit of Shakespeare thrown in for good measure. Now Cleopatra is being appropriated by Diversity Equity and Inclusion programs to tell a new story of women of color triumphing over oppression. Life is hard when you are an absolute ruler of an Empire on its last legs.
