Reading Group on The Authoritarian Personality

We will be meeting on April 6 this month! 8:30 am. We welcome newcomers. We have been having really good discussions. Thank you to those of you who have participated and contributed.

The Authoritarian Personality survey includes a statement about ‘prying’ — as a measure of what people in the 1940s felt about private life and public sphere. I also want to talk about “rigidity” — a personality feature the sociologists attribute to Right Wing types who are susceptible to Fascism.

We’re going to discuss the reversal of public/private life on Sunday, among other issues. This has been the first week back of teaching and I’m surprised I’m still standing. It’s mostly stress of my own making (taking on too much) but also has to do with the nature of the contemporary University.
