Next Reading Group Meeting March 3rd 8:30 am PST
We are going to take on The Authoritarian Personality
We have been building up to this discussion for a few months and I’m really looking forward to it! Text here!
We will spend two meetings talking about this text, a synthesis of qualitative and quantitative data put together by Theodor Adorno, Else Frenkel-Brunswik, Daniel Levinson and R. Nevitt Sanford in order to identify people’s susceptiblity to Fascism.
Today a survey is available here without the followup interviews that allowed the researchers to paint an adequate portrait of the “personality” as a whole. Bring your score.
Seventy years ago, the liberal personality was opposed to the authoritarian personality, which was prone to conspiracy theory thinking, racism, nationalism, homophobia, hatred of the arts and intellectual life. Does this opposition still hold, or is there a kind of neoliberal authoritarianism that demands its own kind of submission? Join us! You don’t have to have attended our previous meetings. We do review and revisit ideas in our discussion…Thank you to all the repeat attenders! You’ve made this a rich and worthwhile experience.
