We will discuss Culture Industry as Mass Deception and also Coldness/Indifference/Apathy as a Sadean counterpoint to the Genre of Melodrama

We’re going to be continuing our discussion of the Culture Industry chapter in Dialectic of Enlightenment, but also looking at accelerationism as a form of Sadean Enlightenment.

I promised excerpts from Sade’s Juliette — look for it after New Year’s.

Also I had the thought that liberalism is unable to escape from melodrama and conservatism tries to sell pseudo-Stoicism.

If you have films or other culture industry products you would like to discuss, let me know.

In terms of working class cinema, I would recommend the films of Mike Leigh, Andrea Arnold, Hou Hsiao-hsien. Then you could accuse me of just liking art/independent cinema. I have also heard that the Chinese microblogging site, Kuaishou is full of everyday life of migrant workers, in and outside of China.
