So excited for the frankfurt school seminar. I was first acquainted with adorno as a curious teen spending too much time online, happening upon the “Adorno on Protest Music” meme video on youtube. I was struck by what he was saying about the cultural industry itself, and popular music, but at the time I was confused if he was making a normative claim or judgement on what we should listen to. I remember thinking, “what a blowhard… I’m supposed to listen to only avant garde atonal classical music or something..?” Anyway, I don’t think that’s what he meant so I’m excited to actually learn more.
P.S. I’ve also been reading your book “American Idyll” so I have been careful not to charge him as an elitist :).
Recently I’ve been enthralled with your discussions on the postmodernist cultural critics’ turn toward the consumer as a locus where some transformative experience can occur (Stuart Hall, Fiske I think). The idea that you cannot criticize the “fan’s” experience, or the example you gave about only looking at punk as an aesthetic movement, which strips it of any political origin.
Super excited by this proposition. Immediately subscribed upon reading this and purchased the first few works. Will also try to convince interested people to join.
But then the crucial question remains: will we receive a Catherine Liu certificate to put on our LinkedIn? /s
Love this reading list, especially thrilled to see Harry Braverman there. Only discovered him relatively recently (via a Cliuanon discussion!) and am knocked out by his writing. There’s a section on white collar clerical work that absolutely nails the role of contemporary managerialism in reinforcing class relations, extracting labour etc. So, so good.
