The AAUP has a great set of data on the transformation of the profession of teaching in Higher Education in the U.S. What we have known, but not know in its full extremity is that the number of tenure track and tenured positions in American Universities has collapsed while the numbers of contingent, adjunct faculty who teach the majority of America’s undergraduates has increased dramatically since 1987.
