All right as promised, dear Bill, I have two proposals. Number one, above the paywall.
Break up the Ivy League Cartel — Matt Stoller is my go to guy on anti-trust legislation. He has some great ideas here. One easy thing that could be done with bipartisan support that Trump supported was charge a tax on every university that has 500K in endowment funds per student. I think something more radical would be to get rid of the tax deduction on contributions to the Ivy League. You wouldn’t have been able to get that $10 million deduction in 2017 on the stock donation, but think of the headache and heartache that you would have been spared. And you would have kept the stock until now and it would be worth $85 million and you would be able to go burn it on an altar to Odin if you wanted. I know you don’t want to do that because you’re not a pagan. Start your own university, like your conservative plans there. See how that works.
Also work with politicians willing to go after the tax exempt not for profit status of private universities with endowments over $1 billion. Work on creating legislations, lobby legislators to force Ivy League schools to increase numbers of students admitted by spending down their endowments, or a more radical formula, donate their endowments to expand enrollment in community and state colleges in their area, — in Harvard’s case, UMass Boston — and actual Diversity, Equity and Inclusion effort.
Also this new book The College Cartel might give you some ideas about trust busting.
Fund Matt Stoller’s BIG, fund anti-monopoly Left Wing think tanks and law firms. it might be fun for a change of pace since all you capitalists say you LOVE competition. As an adult tennis player, I hate cheating and I love competition and it feels like the Ivies are cheating in the higher prestige game and they should be defaulted!!!
Now my idea.
